Piss off I'm stuffed.

My brother a few years back gave to me an expression that I will forever carry with me. The expression is "It's a Hamburger". It means that an issue or event is not something that is worth your time, because it wasn't worth someone else's time earlier although they are making alot of noise now  - as if it was important.

Bear with me if you will, while I tell the story of its origin and it will make more sense. My brother and a friend of his (We will call him Bill) go to a popular burger joint and go to the counter to order. They place their orders with my brother's order being very specific, something like, "extra tomatoes, no lettuce and easy on the mustard, make the bacon crispy.." They collect their orders and go and sit down to eat their food. My brother, upon unwrapping his food, is dismayed that it is not in compliance with the specific instructions he left with the clerk at the counter. He begins to express his displeasure to his friend that they(the clerks or cooks) always get his order wrong.

"Bring it back." Bill says.
"No," my brother explains, "Then it will take another 10-15 minutes to get the food, and it will probably be screwed up again."
"So what?" Bill says. "You're paying for it, you should get it the way you wanted it, if they screwed it up then that's on them. Bring it back."
"No," My brothers says, "I'll just eat it and we can go." And before he can another word Bill interrupts him.
"Then shut the fuck up."
 "Huh?" my brother asks dumbfounded.

"If it isn't important enough for you to try and do something about it, then I am pretty sure it isn't important enough for me to have to listen to you bitch and whine about it."

The point being if you aren't willing to try and fix something, (particularly when you have a reasonable chance to fix it...) then you really have no right to expect the rest of the world to listen to you lament about that which you could have righted.

The world is filled with people talking about hamburgers. The world is full of people who complain about politics but never participate. The world is filled with people who lament social justice but fail to educate people around them to the injustices that occur. Don't get me wrong, we all have a right to say what we want. We all have the freedom to express ourselves. But the freedom to choose, speak and act all rely on the premise that we can make our behavior good, that we will speak truth not falsehoods, and we will take action to aid our fellow human and not hurt or harm them. So the next time you are at a table and a non-voter complains about the government, or the cost of taxes. Tell them your full and the last thing you need in your life is another friggin burger.

Get out and Vote!

  1. My story was second hand. To give credit where it is due, I believe it was Tim who told me the story, and it was Dennis who'd told Tim he could either bring the burger back, or let Dennis bring it up (he volunteered), or just shut up about it, but that Dennis wouldn't listen to Tim whine. And, again, if I recall correctly, I believe Tim paused, told Dennis he was absolutely right, and brought the burger back.
